The Boys[]

A trio of teenage boys, and the main story's leads.

[]

  • Ascended Extra: All three of them are very minor characters in the original Animal Crossing, only being three of hundreds of available villagers. Here, they're explicitly the main characters.
  • Beauty, Brains and Brawn: Gender-inverted version. Kidd (the prissy appearance-conscious snark) is the Beauty, Tank (the researcher interested in studying across the region) is the Brains, and the energetic battle-obsessed Benedict is the Brawn.
  • Big Eater: All three of them are comically big eaters, regularly clearing off big meals like nothing. Justified due to traveling across the Hoenn region on foot, and needing all the calories they can get.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Gender-inverted as well. Tank is the sweet easy-going Blond (albeit his hair is green), Kidd is the sharp snarky Brunet, Benedict is the loud passionate Redhead.
  • Chromatic Arrangement: Benedict is Red (with his long red hair, Fire-type starter, and fiery redhead nature), Kidd is Blue (Water-type starter, cool colored fur, water Zodiac sign), and Tank is Green (Grass-type starter, hair compared to a leaf, calm one of the group).
  • Deadpan Snarker: All three of the boys are regularly sarcastic, mostly towards each other but occasionally to others.
  • Disappeared Dad: Mornay (Benedict's dad) is a deadbeat who left to take on the Galar League, while Merlot (Kidd's dad) went to Alola after the divorce. Neither of them want a part in their kids' lives.
  • Drink Order: The boys' usual drinks symbolize something about them. Kidd frequently orders coffee, fitting his bitter side and Kalosian roots. Tank usually gets tea, to represent his Hoennian heritage and calm nature. Benedict often gets sweeter-tasting drinks, since he's the most energetic of the group.
  • Edible Theme Naming: Kidd's last name, Chavignol, references a type of goat cheese, while Tank's last name is Pepper.
  • Flower Motifs: Kidd is associated with pansies (a flower associated with love and romance, something he seeks in his life), Benedict gets hollyhocks (a flower representing ambition, and can be found across Europe/North America/Asia, covering his Galar/Unova/Hoenn roots), and Tank is represented with camellias (a calming flower used with tea, and represents appreciation and admiration).
  • Freudian Trio: Benedict is the loud passionate Id, Kidd is the detached cynical Superego, and Tank is the reliable responsible Ego (albeit with his own quirks).
  • Land, Sea, Sky: Their starters and characteristics represent each part of Hoenn. Tank, with his Grass-type starter and being the most grounded of the trio, makes him the Land. Kidd, with his Water-type starter and association with water, makes him the Sea. Benedict, with the chick Pokémon Torchic and his freespirited nature make him the Sky.
  • Nice, Mean and In-Between: Tank is the sociable and considerate Nice, Kidd is the deadpan and snippy Mean, and Benedict is the sarcastic but well-meaning delinquent In-Between.
  • Power Trio: The main characters are a trio of three who travel the Hoenn region together.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Kidd is the prissy fashionable Sensitive Guy to Benedict's and Tank's hot-blooded adventurous Manly Men.
  • Species Surname: Downplayed. Benedict's last name is Sussex (a breed of chicken) and Kidd's is Chavignol (a type of goat cheese originating from France).
  • Town Girls: Gender-inverted case. Kidd is the touchy appearance-focused femme, Benedict is the aggressive battle-loving butch, and Tank is the easy-going researching neither.

Benedict Sussex[]

The main character of the story, a recent immigrant to Hoenn and the League challenger of the trio.

  • But Not Too Foreign: He's Hoennian on his mom's side and Galarian on his dad's side. He identifies himself as Unovan (due to being born and raised in Castelia City), and is treated by the locals as a foreigner.
  • Fiery Redhead: His hair and feathers are a bright shade of red, and he's very passionate and energetic about Pokémon battling.
  • Japanese Delinquents: Downplayed. He's half-Hoennian and was a delinquent back in school (was suspended from school five times for fighting teachers, often skipped class to go to Nimbasa City). The main story has him significantly mellowed out.

Tank Pepper[]

The native Hoennian of the group, and the most well-adjusted of the trio.

  • Green Thumb: He's a Grass-type specialist, and is frequently associated with plants and nature.
  • Only Sane Man: Compared to the other protagonists, Tank is reasonable and carries the least amount of emotional baggage.

Kidd Chavignol[]

The frequently sarcastic Kalos immigrant, who eventually takes up Pokémon Contests.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: One part of his troublesome past involves being bullied in his school for not being a "cute" species.
  • French Jerk: He's originally from Kalos, and is sarcastic and dismissive to others. He eventually grows out of his rudeness.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: His usual outfit includes a scarf, and he becomes a competent trainer who can hold his own against both Cottage and Pastel.

The Hawkwinds[]

A highly influential family in Hoenn, consisting entirely of eagles.

Tropes that apply to two or more of the Hawkwinds:

  • Interspecies Romance: While this is normal in Hoenn, the Hawkwind family are especially prone to this. Apollo is in a steady relationship with Wolfgang (a wolf), Frank was romantically involved with Rooney (a kangaroo), and Don has affairs with multiple women that aren't eagles (Coco the rabbit and Gloria the duck being two of his confirmed mistresses).
  • Musical Theme Naming: Their family name comes from the British space rock band.
  • Noble Male, Roguish Male: Apollo is the gentleman Noble who vows to protect Hoenn's citizens, while Frank is crude, reckless, smokes a lot, has a criminal record, and is only fighting Cottage and Pastel to feel something again.

Apollo Hawkwind[]

The Hoenn League Champion, and a major recurring character in the story.

  • Big Good: He's the regional Champion, and often focuses on protecting civilians from both evil teams.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Apollo gets the most fanservice out of the major cast, being incredibly good-looking, having countless adoring fans, starring in several adult magazines, and having a healthy sex life with Wolfgang.

Frank Hawkwind[]

A private investigator whose tracking down both villainous teams, and supposedly Apollo's first cousin.

  • Dead Sidekick: A major part of his trauma involves the death of his first Pokémon, Belladonna the Croagunk.
  • Genre Refugee: Frank is based on film noir leads, being a private investigator who works alone and smokes much more than the rest of the cast.
  • Sir Swearsalot: Frank swears much more than the rest of the cast combined.

The Hoenn League[]

The Gym Leaders and Elite Four of the Hoenn region.
