Degrassi (Junior?) High Coming to DVD
Ok, so I was inadvertantly watching the TV Guide channel. They were showing clips of the new Degrassi series: Degrassi: The New Generation. (I think that's the name of it).
The lady that was covering that segment mentioned that the original show (not sure if it's The Kids of Degrassi, Degrassi Junior High, or Degrassi High) was going to come out in June. I tried to look for information online, but I came up with nothing.
Anyway, I wonder if there's any merit to that. Anybody else hear anything?

Degrassi: The New Generation. (I think that's the name of it).
I believe it's "Next Gen", like 'Star Trek'; it's actually a pretty decent show, though it suffers from being only a half hour.
I've heard it said that they're putting out a season of the new one and a season of the original (I believe it was starting in Jr. High, but not sure), but I don't think the details have ever been finalized. I believe there have been several dates posted, including at least one which passed (I know there was at least one Canadian store on-line which said it had come out in February and was taking orders, but I didn't order because I didn't trust it).
I'm pretty sure there are no specifics yet, but it's in the works.

I'd never heard of this show until I saw Chasing Amy. The sum of my knowledge concerning that show is still limited to that obscure reference in Chasing Amy.

I, along with many other Canadians, grew up on Kids of Degrassi/ Junion High/High. Kevin Smith is a huge fan. When they did a reunion show on a talk show, he sent an email saying that if they ever did another series with the old characters, he would be there.
Man, that Caitlin was hot. Also, she said the f work on CBC (it was the final two hour movie, when she confronted Joey Jerimiah about cheating on her saying: "You were *****ing Tessa Campanelli!??!?!")
Stephanie Kay, a total babe in the younger series, ended up looking like a man.
Anyone else got any memories to share? Not really the right forum, but oh well...

I remember many school assemblies from kidnergarten to grade six would end off with the projector being wheeled out at the back of the gymnasium and an episode of The Kids of Degrassi would be played. Quite a few actors from Junior High (and later on High) were on the show, but I believe most played different characters than they did on the later shows.
Of course since then I've gone on to watch probably every episode of Junior High when CBC used to play them after school, and High when they they originally aired on CBC one night a week (Sundays or Mondays I believe.) The movie was good too.

Boy, that would be super if Degrassi Jr. High came out on DVD. Loved the show when I was younger....had a big crush on "Wheels" for reasons I can't even comprehend now!

I would buy the original Degrassi Junior High/Degrassi High on DVD in a heartbeat. I remember TV Shows on DVD reporting that there'd be a DVD release soon, so let's hope.

They definately need to do a reunion show or something I would love to see what everyone looks nowadays and highlights from all the years.
oh... I've got that song just bursting out of my head..
Wake up in the morning, feeling shy and lonely,
gee, I gotta go to this school.
I don't think I can make it, don't think I can take,
I wonder what I'm gonna do.
But when I look around and see,
that someone is smiling right at me,
wait, someone talkin' to me, hey, I gotta new friend.
Everybody can succeed, all you gotta do is believe,
let's be honest with yourself, forget your fears and doubts,
come on give us a try at Degrassi Junior High.

'Next Generation' stars Spike's daughter, so Spike is a prominent character. Snake is a teacher at the school (there's way more to it than that, but I wouldn't spoil anything). Joey became a regular in the second season through a complicated ... well, it wasn't quite an adoption and it wasn't quite a foster home thing. But he's there. Caitlin is in quite a few episodes, she may be a regular now.
The pilot had, I believe, most of the main characters of the old show (I don't know the characters well enough to be sure, and it's been a while since I saw that episode, which also wasn't even that good an ep). And Wheels was in an episode of the third season; he and Snake and Joey go bowling.
[Of course, for a show about high school, with a huge ensemble cast and only a half hour to tell each story, it does tend to spend a bit too much time on the parents, but I think that's for fans like yourself.]

Man Wheels is definately a serial killer today. Molested(almost) and I seem to remember him living with his grandparents because his folks died in a car crash. He's probably on the Delgrassi Psychiatrist Couch.
The show dealt with some heavy stuff, I remember the chick who got knocked up the first time she did it(the bleached blondie). I can't remember if she had an abortion or the baby(I seem to think the baby).
And I know he was supposed to be cool, but I wanted even at my young age when this was on to slap the sh*t out of Joey Jerimiah with that stupid way he wore his hat(total 80's cheeze there).

Actually, in a nice touch of irony in the movie Wheels was arrested for killing some people while driving drunk (which is how his parents died). That was unexpected and a welcome change to the "happy ending" final episode we're used to seeing.

Yep, Spike had the baby.

Well you can have the last laugh, as he's bald now.

The Degrassi series may be the best set of shows about growing up ever.
Enough with the "aboot" thing; no one I know has pronounced it this way. I have noticed that American kids these days say frushtrated.
Trivia: I remember that a couple of years ago the kid who was the most prominent character in "Kids of Degrassi" (Billy), and who was in the cast of the first two episodes of Junior High, Tyson Talbot, was arrested for murder. Too bad; I remember him quite well from the show.
Kids and Junior are not shown anymore, but I still watch old reruns of High every week for nostalgia. Caitlin would have made a nice girlfriend.
One of the "High" episodes I like most is the one in which Caitlin and Claude (the guy who later offed himself) spray the nuclear factory, and Arthur and Yick paper Radich's house. Another good one is wherein Wheels is kicked out of his Grandma's house.
One of the best episodes from all three series is from "Kids of Degrassi": Neil Hope, who played Wheels later, plays "Griff" in the inaugural series. He likes to draw pictures. He befriends a retarded crossing guard whom he sees every day on the way to and from school, and draws a picture for him. One day, a new crossing guard is on duty, and Griff enquires about his friend; he finds out he has died. This episode reminds me of the "Wonder Years" episode in which Kevin's math teacher, whom he admired, died unexpectedly.
"Kids of Degrassi" has one of the most poignant opening sequences of any TV show: A melancholy piano tune played over still images of archetypal childhood activities.

While Spike did have her baby, Erika (or was it Heather) did not - she had an abortion.
Remember Caitlin's lesbian fantasies about her teacher? Or Kathleen's drunk mother? Or poor Melanie, who, as Joey said, was "so flat she made the walls jealous"? LD ended up with leukemia. Dwayne got AIDS. Pretty heavy stuff for a kids show.

The whole thing they did with AIDS was huge at the time, as it was still pretty new... it was cool that they dealt with it.
Who remembers Wheels' grandma? she was the BEST. His grandpa kicked ass too, because he never talked, he just sat in a chair, he didn't even get a speaking role, he'd sometimes grunt or something though.
Wheel's grandma was such a bitch, it was so damn funny. She read her lines in such a funny way that you couldn't help laughing.
The best had to be when Wheels went hitchhiking to see his real Dad in the band, and then that old guy hit on him in the car. He started talking about sex, then grabbed his knee or crotch or something. Ah, good times.
