    Africa Risingis the inaugural exhibition of FAM’s new collection of 21st-century Africa photography, a sampling of the recent explosion of fine art photography on the continent. The exhibition includes 50 artworks by 33 artists from 17 of Africa’s 54 countries, including photographs by internationally acclaimed artists Zanele Muholi (South Africa), Lalla Essaydi (Morocco), and Aida Muluneh (Ethiopia). Themes that recur across this visually stunning show include identity in the aftermath of colonialism, environmental exploitation and decay, female empowerment, and Afro-Futurism.Africa Rising, and the expansion of FAM’s collection, are supported by a generous grant from theGeneviève McMillan – Reba Stewart Foundation.

    On June 17, 2021 Juneteenth was made a federal holiday inthe United States. For many years this holiday was celebrated in theBlack/African American Community in the United States. Juneteenth celebrates when the State of Texasfinally reached notice that Slavery ended and enslaved people there were giventheir freedom. For many this day is the true Independence Day even though itwas many years after the American Revolution and the end of Slavery.
