Air fryer pizza recipe! Did you know that your air fryer is basically a mini pizza oven? Not only does it result in a super crispy finish, but it cooks fast, meaning this recipe only takes 30 mins from start to finish.

Air fryer pizza recipe, anyone? This isn’t something I expected to be making in my air fryer… but after one bite, I’m not sure I’ll ever go back to making this in the oven! Best of all, the dough doesn’t need any yeast or proving, making this one a total doddle.

Since we bought an air fryer a few months ago, we just keep finding more and more ways to use it.

Of course, we’ve done air fryer chips, chicken tenders, buttermilk chicken and even cooked frozen oven-food in it too. It just makes dinner times so much more straightforward and quick… and healthier too on most occasions!

But one thing I never thought I’d be making was pizza. But I’m so glad I did!

We have a gas-fire, portable pizza oven but as it’s winter at the mo, it’s sadly resigned to the garage for now. Who knew our air fryer could do an extremely similar job?!

Why make my air fryer pizza?

  • You only need 2 simple ingredients to make the dough – Greek Yoghurt and gluten-free self-raising flour. And no, it doesn’t taste like yoghurt at all!
  • The air fryer acts as a mini pizza oven, giving you a noticeably crispier pizza base and a pizza-oven like finish to your toppings!
  • If you want to make this recipe dairy-free or vegan, simply use dairy-free yoghurt and suitable toppings.
  • The air fryer is incredibly quick at cooking pizza, meaning this only takes 30 minutes from start to finish.
  • You can use this dough to make naan breads and pitta bread in the air fryer too!

So, what does my air fryer pizza taste like?

The base is SUPER crispy and because the air fryer blasts lots of hot air in a confined space, the crust puffs up wonderfully. I used to avoid eating the crust as a kid, now it seems to be the best part!

But most importantly, the air fryer does such an amazing job when it comes to cooking the topping. Our pizzas literally looked like they came out of the pizza oven!!

And if I can make this, then you definitely can. So get your air fryers preheated and let’s do this… Ok, maybe don’t preheat it this early!

Air fryer pizza recipe: Ingredients

  • Greek yoghurt: I use Greek yoghurt because it’s lovely and thick. Natural yoghurt works too, but you may need to add more flour to compensate for it being runnier.
  • Gluten-free self-raising flour: I used Doves Farm’s FREEE flour blend for this, which has added baking powder and xanthan gum. Both of which are welcome in this recipe!
  • Passata: There’s definitely never any need to buy pizza sauce when you can buy a carton of passata for 30p and just add the below to it!
  • Dried oregano: This works so well in pizza sauce to give it a lovely flavour and you can also sprinkle a little on top after putting your toppings on.
  • Garlic-infused oil: Add instant garlic flavour with none of the chopping or prep required. Plus, it’s also low FODMAP!
  • Mozzarella: This is the ultimate cheese for pizza, but feel free to use whatever cheese you like. Dairy-free works too.
  • Pepperoni: Of course, this is what I opted to top my pizza with, but again, feel free to use whatever toppings you like.
  • Salt and pepper: Seasoning is everything, especially in pizza!

So I thought I’d kick things off with a little frequently asked questions section – if you just want the recipe, then keep scrolling.

But I’ve thrown in some tips here that will be really helpful if this is your first time making this, or you want to adapt it. So here they are!

Can I make this recipe gluten-free?

It is gluten-free, though nobody would know just by tasting it – trust me!

Bear in mind that minimising cross-contamination is hugely important if you’re Coeliac or making this for someone who is. Here’s some tips from Coeliac UK on minimising the risk of cross contamination.

Also, make sure that all ingredients used don’t have any gluten-containing ingredients. Then make sure that they also don’t have a ‘may contain’ warning for gluten, wheat, rye, barley, oats (which aren’t gf), spelt and khorasan wheat (aka Kamut).

Can I make your air fryer pizza recipe dairy free?

Yep, this recipe is dairy free! Simply use dairy free yoghurt – I often use Koko dairy free plain yoghurt to make this recipe and you’d never know the difference.

Of course, ensure all your toppings and cheese are dairy-free too.

Can I make your air fryer pizza recipe vegan?

Yes! Just read the dairy-free advice above and you’ll have made it vegan too. Just make sure all your toppings are vegan too.

Is your air fryer pizza recipe nut-free?

Yep, this is a nut-free recipe as far as ingredients go, BUT make sure you check the ingredients label on ALL the products you use just to be safe.

Even if the products don’t contain nuts, they may have a ‘may contain nuts’ warning due to being produced in a factory that handles nuts.

You can never be too careful so always read the labels on everything first.

Is your air fryer pizza recipe low FODMAP?

Yes! You can easily make this low FODMAP by using lactose free plain or greek yoghurt – that way, it’s suitable for the elimination phase of the FODMAP diet and all other phases too.

Of course, ensure all your toppings are low FODMAP too – I actually use this pepperoni from Sainsbury’s which has no onion or garlic.

Which air fryer do you use?

I use the Ninja Foodi Max (also known as the Ninja Foodi XL) which is not only an air fryer, but a health grill too (shown in the photo below).

Of course, though I use this specific machine, any air fryer will do! Just remember that they all vary slightly so keep in mind that:

  • Some air fryers have smaller frying compartments than others (mine is 3.8L) so if yours is considerably smaller, you’ll need to make multiple, smaller pizzas.
  • Some air fryers don’t go up to 200C / 400F – in that case, just use the highest temperature possible.
  • Cooking times may vary from air fryer to air fryer. So use your own judgement a little to know when it’s done! See the ‘how can I tell when my pizza is done?’ question below.

Which air fryer should I buy?

Of course, I can whole heartedly recommend mine (link here) – it’s amazing! But of course, the decision is entirely up to you.

Mine is more expensive as it has the health grill aspect too (it basically doubles up as a George Foreman which is awesome when we can’t BBQ in the winter months). It’s also a little on the larger size due to the extra grill function.

Some of the more reasonably priced options we were considering were the Tower Air Fryer and the Tefal Easy Fry Precision.

But whatever you buy, I’d recommending getting one that has around a 4 litre capacity. You simply can’t cook much in anything smaller and you’ll end up having to cook everything in loads of small batches!

Are air-fried pizzas healthier?

Well, since you don’t need oil to fry pizza in the first place, cooking this in the air fryer doesn’t make this recipe any healthier than any other method of cooking pizza.

However, it is much faster than the oven if you cook it in the air fryer. An air fryer generally yields better results as it ‘blasts’ the pizza with hot air, similar to how a pizza oven would!

What yoghurt should I use for this recipe?

It’s totally up to you. I’d recommend using a lovely, thick Greek yoghurt – that’s what I use to make this recipe.

Natural yoghurt works fine too, but as it’s runnier, you might need a little more flour to compensate.

If you want to keep this recipe vegan and dairy free, simply use Koko dairy free plain yoghurt.

Can I simply make these in the oven instead? I don’t have an air fryer!

Yes you can! In that case, I’d recommend following my regular gluten-free pizza recipe which you can find over here – it’s just easier!

How can I tell when my air fryer pizzas are done?

Once the toppings look nice and cooked and your crust is nice and golden, it’s done!

The air fryer cooks very quickly, so once topped, it shouldn’t need longer than 2-3 minutes depending on your air fryer.

Why use an air fryer to cook a pizza?

Well, because it actually acts very similar to a pizza oven! A pizza oven cooks extremely quickly due to super hot temperatures, giving your pizza an ultra crisp finish.

Whilst an air fryer doesn’t reach the crazy temperatures of a pizza oven, it does still yield very similar results. That’s because the air fryer ‘blasts’ hot air in a very confined space, resulting in very quick cooking and a perfectly crisp finish.

My dough was too wet and sticky to roll. What should I do?

Firstly, it’s supposed to be a little sticky as a formed dough in the bowl. As long as you’re able to bring it together into a ball, when you start rolling it out on a floured surface, the extra flour should make sure it doesn’t stick to your surface, hands or rolling pin.

There’s only two main ingredients here (yoghurt and gf flour) so measuring them out correctly is really important. It’ll stop you from adding in too much yoghurt in the first place and making the dough too wet!

But of course, if you have added too much yoghurt by accident, you can always just add a little extra flour until it’s the correct consistency.

My dough was too dry and cracked and crumbly.

If the dough seems a little crumbly in the bowl, get it out of the bowl and knead it on a floured surface first before adding any extra wet ingredients.

This will ensure that it’s truly combined and there isn’t any yoghurt not properly mixed in at the centre of the dough. If it’s too crumbly to form a dough ball, then simply add a little extra yoghurt to compensate.

Air fryer pizza recipe: Method

Add your yoghurt, flour and salt into a bowl and mix together. I initially just do this with a spatula and then as it starts to come together I use my hands to ensure it’s all pushed into a big ball. Knead it a little so its smooth – the dough should not be sticky.

The size of your air fryer basket will determine how big your pizza bases can be. Cut your dough into likely 2 pieces (or 3 if your air fryer basket is small).

Roll out one portion on lightly floured non stick baking paper until fairly thin (mine is usually under half a cm thick). Roll it out to be a similar shape to your air fryer basket so that it will fit comfortably. You can cut around the edge of your dough if you want neat edges and so that it fits.

Switch on your air fryer and set it to 200C to preheat.

Transfer your pizza base to a fresh piece of non stick baking paper (not floured) ready to place into the air fryer.

Once heated lift up your baking paper and pizza base. Place it into the air fryer and cook for about 6 minutes until the top side is slightly golden. Cooking times may slightly vary depending on your air fryer!

After 6 minutes, remove the base from the air fryer using the baking paper to lift it out. Flip the base over and cover with your pizza sauce, leaving just over a 1cm gap around the edge.

Cover with mozzarella and any other toppings you wish. Finish with a little sprinkling of dried oregano – trust me, it’s awesome!

Place back into the air fryer at 200C for a further 3-4 minutes until the pizza is done – the base should be nicely coloured and the cheese melted and golden in places.

Remove from the air fryer and repeat steps 3-8 to make additional pizzas. Enjoy!

Ingredients

For the base
